Doctors Using Magnets To Reconnect The Brain And Interrupt The Destructive Influence Of Depression
U.S. medical community hopes that the new, experimental therapy, to help over 19 million Americans who suffer from depression. Like millions of Americans, Martha has depression, but loathe to talk about her illness. She asked for her identity to remain secret. “Definitely I think that those who suffer from it judge themselves,” said Marta … explaining that because depression she wasn’t able to function. When medicines and therapies have not made any result, she decided to try a kind of deep brain stimulation. Sarah Lisanby, M.Di, of the New York State Psychiatric Institute, used a process known as repetitivetranscranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)
“We are in a very interesting stage of psychiatry. Looking at the possibilities of that brain stimulation as a way of treatment, I think we only just scratched the surface” says Sarah Lisanby.
Depression Treatment TMS uses pulsating magnet, which indicates very little electric current in the part of the brain affected by depression. The magnet “re-establishes” normal brain activity and the symptoms seam to diminish. With the help of TSM therapy Marta experienced drastic improvement after only few weeks, and as she said she is finally happy and laughing. First TSM-results are positive, but it hasn’t been approved by the FDA (US Food and Drug Administration). If proved secure and efficient, magnetic stimulation could be used for depression and epilepsy.
